Subject: Re: Difference between developer2000 & designer2000
Designer 2000 has a ton of functionality. At a high level it allows one to build and
evolve a series of models (e.g., Process, Data, Relationship, Functional Hierarchy) that
reflect the way the resultant application must function for the client. It can also
generate executable code. Web Forms (used in the NCA) can only be generated by Designer
2000, today. Some at Oracle believe that Designer will some day obviate the need for
Developer 2000, dream on. This is not a commentary on the capabilities of Oracle Corp.
since their capabilities are immense. It is only based upon my belief that no GENERIC
software will ever (yes I said ever) be able to predict the combinations and permutations
of requirements that a normal human mind can dream up let alone the abnormal ones. And, if
I'm wrong on that note then I'm confident in believing that SUN could not build enough
E10000s to run the software.
Oh ya, Developer 2000 also has a ton of functionality. Again, at a high level, it is a 4GL
that can be used stand-alone or in concert with Designer 2000. Often, Designer 2000 is
used in the ANALYSIS and DESIGN phase, and then the code it generates is modified using
Developer 2000 in the BUILD phase. Analysts have reported varying degrees of success in
pushing changes made in Developer back to the Designer CASE Repository. Oracle says it
works, I think it just takes a great deal of training, experience, and tenacity.

Frank - Question about your statement:
Web Forms (used in the NCA) can only be generated by Designer 2000, today. As we prepare
to move to the NCA architecture, I was under the impression that the Forms 4.5 app within
Developer/2000 could generate the Web-based forms. Am I wrong?

As far as I understand Oracle Applications with the Network Computing Architecture are
built using Developer/2000 and Designer 2000 is not used neither in the middle tier of
application servers nor in the database servers.

Steve, You are correct, and my statement was incorrect. The point that I should have made
is that there are "architectural" caveats when using Web Forms (surprise,
surprise). We (my client) must use Designer generated Web Forms because of our
architecture (double fire wall, HTTP, Port 80, mumbo-jumbo). Although you are correct that
Developer can generate Web Forms as well. It has more to do with SQL*Net and TCP/IP than
it does with Designer and Developer. I will write this up in more detail later.
Thanks for keeping me honest. Frank
Designer 2000 - compilation error

Subject: urgent
Hi, I have got this major problem with Designer 2000 Rel 2.1. Actually I had a module
which was created on Rel 1.2. Then we converted that module for Rel 2.1. Now I am unable
to compile it. I keep getting the internal cache error all the time except when I include
a certain combination of 18 columns (out of 48) in the base table usage. This combination
I discovered it accidentally. If I remove any column or add any column to these 18 columns
of the base table in Designer then I promptly get an internal cache error. Otherwise the
module compiles fine and even creates the .fmx. What could be the cause? sanjay

Hi, You can generate the output from Reports2.5 to Excel using DDE. You need to use the
DDE.Execute to generate the output to Excel. For more information you can check the
Reports Help on DDE and DDE.Execute.
Hope it helps -Amar

Hi, The best solution I have found is to create the query in Browser (discoverer) or Query
Builder (developer) and paste the SQL into Microsoft Query. The query runs under excel via
ODBC and returns the results to the spreadsheet.

Asked this question at OAUG-San Diego. D2K 1.6.1 works for 10.7 NCA and 11 NCA. Developer
6 will be the new version for Apps Rel 11i, and will include Forms 6, Reports 6, etc.

Converting Develope Form to WebDb

Subject: Converting Developer Forms to WebDB
Hi all
I am currently involved with a university project developing and upgrading an existing
Form 5 program to web. As the development platform, we have decided to use WebDB. One of
the primary problems that we are currently having is the conversion of Form 5 forms to we
forms. Do you have any knowledge of such a procedure. We are currently converting each
form by hand (creating the basic form - master/detail etc, and then hand coding each
aspect of the form). Is there a procedure for a easier method of conversion.
Any information, or ideas of where to go for information, would be greatly appreciated.
The university is a Western Australian based uni (Edith Cowan University).
Thanks in advance

Session gets locked

Subject: *SESSION GETS LOCKED*
Hi All
we have successfully implemented a project on developer2000 on web, and has been running
for about six months, there is a problem that we face here is that when a user logs in and
for some reason logs out and again logs in he finds the session for his terminal locked
may be at the database end.
How can this problem be eradicated?
One way is we find out the pending processes and kill them by checking at some intervals,
we are on NT and do not know how is done in it, is there any automatic script running
procedure, we can take help from the system admin department but we do it, great.
I remember somebody had script of analyzing the pending session / processes and killing
them on the list / net if somebody can share it with me, it will be a great help.
Also, how can we find out an IP ADDRESS of the machine running the application, eiither
through forms or SQL, any pointers will be a great help.
Waiting for a solution....
Susan

Hi,
If you have a server manager that is easy, using the disconnect session menu. But to do it
manually.
You connect using a DBA User/System and check out V$SESSION view and look for sid,
serial#, machine ( IP Address) ......
After determining the sid, serial# you can issue the command
ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION '8,19' where 8 is SID , 19 serial#.

I recently looked for the same thing and found the following Metalink.
Developer/2000
Installation Guide for the Web
Release 1.6 for Sun SPARC Solaris 2.x
I couldn't find one specifically for 1.6.1.
If that's the one you want (assuming you are on Solaris), I had to do a search on Install
and Developer/2000 to find it - I didn't find under the Tools/Developer icon.

2. I have defined an item class on PO folder -- Invoice folder when I drill down from PO
if more than one project has same PO how do I display the invoice details only for the
project that I have selected?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
