Hi all,
We have ORACLE APPS 10.7 SC Prod 16.1 installed at a customer site as well
as Crystal Reports Writer to be used with our Maintenance Management
application. We are proposing Discoverer 2000 as well. However, the
following issue came up: Why not use Crystal instead of Discoverer 2000?...
Can any one suggest some reasons why Discoverer 2000 should be recommended?
TIA

We have just install discoverer 3.1.36 on our 10.7 SC NT platform system. I
don't have any words of wisdom at this stage but would be keen to hear about
any issues you uncover.

We use Discover and Crystal and then found out that we could also use
microsoft Access. Since most people in our company use Access and
have it installed, we find this is the product of choice. Our more
sophisticated users are using Visual FoxPro. I guess what I am saying
is that it doesn't matter. The three important things to consider are
cost, learning curve and performance. So far, we have not found that
any software package runs faster than the other.

Danette, I am elated to know that your users are familiar with both
products. What I am really interested in is some form of comparison between
two products. We have recommended Disc for a customer who already have
Crystal. They want to know what Disc has that Crystal doesn't.

Ralph,
We use Discoverer for end users.
We use Discoverer because we also bought a product called "Noetix" which
when installed on the database server provides views for all the oracle apps
scenarios you require. You get nice easy end-user friendly view and column
names so they dont even have to join PO table to AP tables for instance to
get Purchase Orders with Payment details in the same report. You purchase
Noetix only for the Apps modules you require. They also keep the views upto
date when Oracle itself make version changes.
Without Noetix Discoverer is just another reporting tool really. I dont
work for Noetix (available from a company called Arris something I think)
and its not the best thing since sliced bread but it does make it a lot
easier for end users!
[Note. For our Reports 2.5 fixed reports provided to end users, we gave up
on Noetix because we found that once our developers knew the base Oracle
tables and joins there was a learning curve to use the Noetix ones.]

Ralph & Steve:
Noetix Views are a product of Aris Corportation. See aris.com for details.
I agree with steve. Noetix is what make Discoverer usable from the
standpoint of the end user. It is also a good product to use with Crystal
Reports.

thrilled. It is being widely used by our end users.

An alternative suggestion is to use the newer versions of Discoverer that
work over the internet/intranet and then the client setup will not affect
the tool.

We are using discoverer on winframe and using noetix and my only advice
would be to make sure you're users are very careful in their use of noetix
(e.g. do NOT EVER join 2 or more views together) - this is pretty standard
stuff - but the performance hit we take when discoverer is misused is very
apparent...
But it works fine otherwise

D2K Pathset for upgrade
From: Bharat Patel [mailto:bpatel@DOMINOAMJET.com]

Hi, Guys I have a question regarding the upgrading the forms and reports
with D2k patch set. we are on patchset 3 (rel 11.0.2), We have common oracle
home(separate APPL_TOP) on apps server for test as well as production.
I would like to apply this first on my test instance.
The patchset will affect the executable in ORACLE_HOME and it will impact to
both instance.
I don't have right now enough disk space to create separate ORACLE_HOME.
Is there any work around?
thanks in advance.

None that I am aware of. You really need separate Oracle Homes for test and
production anyway. Many FND patches will replace the JAR files stored in
ORACLE_HOME/forms45 etc. You really don't have a valid test environment
unless you separate the ORACLE homes.

When you only have a single Oracle Home, I would think that a reasonable
precaution would be to take a tape (or disk) backup of the Oracle Home with
everything down before applying the patches.

I am aware of no workaround for this.
Oracle no longer recommends the current solution you have(in Rel 11 anyway)

Just finished applying the D2k 1.6.1 #7 patch for 1.6.1 on NT. Didn't see
any change on the toolbar, I'll check again after forms are finished
regenerating. Also, I ended up with a registry corruption that affect my
web listeners. "D:\ORANT\ows\3.0\\bin\wwwlsnr30.exe admin". In the path, an
extra "\" was added, this caused the listener to go into an unstable state.
only the default "www" listener wasn't affected. manually fixing the path
seemed to work ok. I won't know about the active focus problem until I apply
this to my production box.
