We are looking for information on how long other companies keep transactions and balances in Oracle. Specifically, for the GL, Assets, and Payables modules.

Also, if you have experienced any problems with the Archive & Purge as delivered from Oracle, please let us know. We are on 10.7 character. Thanks for your reply!

Hi Sue

I have created a script that removes the archive log files after 5 days online. We do nightly cold backups of all our DB instances including all the archive files too. Fortunately, we have not had a scenario where we had to resort to the archive files but according to Oracle, the layout we have is just fine.

As far as the Archive and Purge utility, we had lots of problems. I believe we are fine now after lots of issues and problems. We need to purge 7 years of data from our test system. The users are still in the process of purging this data and after they complete what they want to purge, then I have to go in and export all the tables that were being purged and re-import them in order to free up the unused tablespace.

Subject: Archived log size??

Hi, At the moment my production database is running under nonarchived mode and I plan to to change it to archive mode.

I wonder the size of the archive file everytime it is being created. The size of my redo log file is 2M each. I have 3 groups of log files with 2 members each. Can someone help me?

Each file when written out will be the size of the online redo log. check the v$loghist view for information on how many log files will be written out in any given period as log switches are recorded here. Although you are running mirrored redo logs only one copy will be written out with each switch.

Graham.

Hi Rudy,

For normal activity of database, you should have 32MB, redo file. 2MB is too small for archive log. Your database operations may wait for archiving. W ith 2MB redo files, you will have so many arch files and you may have managem ent problem.

If activity is high, you should have 64MB redo file size.

Archive PA records

Our PA data tables are huge - running into millions of rows. We are planning to archive the data, removing transactions for some of the projects which are completed in all sense.

Has anyone done this ? Faced any problems ?

Any ideas or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards... Haseeb

I think Oracle had promised to release a new functionality for purge & archive that could be installed on top of release 10.7 and higher. It was supposed to be released during Y99. You may want to check with them before customizing.
