Installation of HR after GL

I know I have asked this question before, but I can't find my responses.

What if any, are the implications of implementing GL before HR? I thought you had to have at least a skeleton HR system in place.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Janet-

I presented a paper last year at the NCOAUG titled 'Strategies for Implementing Oracle HRMS after Oracle Financials'. It illustrates some of the key touch points between the Financials and HRMS modules. Specific to GL, you must make certain that your Cost Allocation Key Flexfield in HRMS maps to your GL Accounting flexfield.

There are other impacts on other modules, especially once modules begin to require employee data, so you must ensure that you do not have people setting up employees without HR input.

I worked at a client that had implemented HR functionality last (even after payroll) and unfortunately, with some business processes, they were bottle necked because of other setups that were done in Financials and payroll modules earlier by other groups, by ignoring the needs of HR. This is the case of the client I am at now, and almost every other client I have worked with.

Thus, it is extremely critical in my mind to involve the HR departments from the beginning of any implementation, and at least get HRMS started with the Key Flexfield foundations in conjunction with the other modules.

All too often, people push HRMS aside, and the consequences can be mind numbing...

If you would like a copy of the paper, please let me know, and I can email it to you.

Janet:

Recently, I completed a project where we brought Oracle HR/Payroll live after Financials. This became the foundation for our upcoming OAUG paper in Orlando entitled "Challenges Implementing Oracle HR/Payroll After Financials". Here are some of my conclusions.

GL really has little impact on HR decisions. The HR/FinApps issue is different when you talk about some of the other Financial modules such as AP and PO. Generally, I prefer HR before or simultaneous to several of the Financial modules. However, I prefer Payroll after or simultaneous to GL because it let's me know that the GL Accounting Flexfield is truly stable before you start making payroll costing decisions with Organizations, Earnings, Deductions, etc.

Hope this helps,
Ken

Subject: [orahrms-l] Input desired on multi-country HR installs

Millipore, a multinational organization, is planning to implement the Oracle HR application (Rel. 10.7) in 2000 at all of our worldwide locations. Payroll will continue to be outsourced with Ceridian.

We would like to talk to any companies who have HR installed in multiple countries (Oracle financials and related applications are a plus!).

Specific topics of interest surround the set up of business group(s) , organizations, currencies, language, GRE, 3rd praty payroll interface,, conversion of new/fractional history, European Union and the Euro, etc..

Please respond to this email or call Donna Barry at 781-533-2111 or Deb Southmayd at 781-533-2534.
