What are people using for ad-hoc reporting?
- Discoverer or other similar end-user query tools?
- Oracle Data Browser?
- SQL with imports into Excel, etc.?
- MS-Access (gag)?
Thanks for your input,

We are using Discover 3.1 with Noetix views and it is working very well for
our easy ad hoc reports. We have developer s creating the more complicated
weekly and monthly reports as custom reports that we run from concurrent

From Discover we can export the information to excel or access for more

Hi Uma,
First of all, it is best to avoid matrix reports.
Modify the query using DECODEs or do some other magic and get the
output what you want.
Modification of field label(BP) or value is possible by format
triggers tied to that field.

Yes it is possible. You could use
DECODE(criteria,true_value,Employee_Status,null), Cost_Center, Org_Name in
your select to specify the criteria and then use a CROSSTAB group with a
matrix layout. The crosstab should include the Org_Name, Cost_Center and
the decode column as three different groups. Remember to have
COUNT(decode(criteria,true_value,EMPLOYEE_ID,Null)) as an additional column
in the select statement, outside the crosstab, before generating the layout.
In Tools, default layout you should also specify the 'Repeat' correctly for
the appropriate groups.
Hope this helps.

W2-caution for terminated employee data
Subject: [orahrms-l] W2 Heads Up

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the new Oracle HR/Payroll List server. I want to publicly thank Greg Clark for his fine efforts to get this thing off the ground.
I would like to start the process by alerting everyone to problems we have encountered while processing year end W2s. Our initial implementation date was July 1, 1998, so we had to do balance loads to get the legacy YTD numbers into Oracle. We had a number of terminated employees who had YTD wages that also needed to be set up and loaded. Since these people were never going to be paid in Oracle, we only loaded what we felt was needed to prepare the W2s at the end of the year. One of the fields we did not populate was salary basis. We did to a test print of the W2, but this was before the date tracked W4 patch that was loaded last fall. What we didn't realize was these employees did not receive a State W4 record in the new date tracked W4 file. The end result was that the state wages were not printed on the W2.
Those of you who did balance loads this year might want to double check your employees that were terminated prior to the implementation date.

Oracle does support the preparation of the State Quarterly Wage Listing
files that you must send to each state every quarter for State Unemployment
Insurance (SUI). You second question sounds more like Workers Compensation,
which is a different employer liability. Oracle does support the
calculation of Workers Compensation liability. You may need to create your
own tape file to send to your Workers Compensation carrier.
The setup procedures for both of these liabilities is handled fairly well in
the manual and help screens. In the case of the SUI files, the output goes
to a disk file in the out directory of $PAY_TOP. It is your responsibility
to get this file onto magnetic media.
Hope this helps

State reporting is handled within the Oracle HRMS application by running the
State Quarterly Wage Listing (SQWL) process by state. The setup is fairly
straightforward and starts with establishing rules on your GRE/Legal Entity
organization classification on the Organization form for the organization(s)
designated as a GRE.
You will be on your own for creation of a file for Frick. The only tricky
part is that you will need to devise a means of flagging an employee as
being reported so that they aren't reported more than once. At my current
client, we are using a descriptive flexfield segment on the Additional
Period of Service Details form for this purpose. If you employ people in
Illinois, you will require some additional processing as well.
Hope this is helpful.

This report came on one of the enhancement patches (don't remember which one) and any documentation will come in the README files associated with the patch.
As far as the start and end dates, the report validates these entries from your payroll processing results, meaning you can only pick dates that exists in your payroll processing results. My guess is that you only have results for 01-APR-1999.

Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 09:24:13 -0500
I am interested in learning how employers are providing new hire
data out of HRMS to the states in which they operate. We're currently
looking at two options: outsourcing this process to the Frick Company (they
provide this service and we're already providing the necessary data via an
interface out of HRMS) or designing and developing an interface directly
from HRMS to the state we've already been set up to provide multi-state
reporting to.
New hire reporting, pushed by the federal government, but run by
individual states is a fairly new phenomenon, with many states requiring
slightly different information in different formats. My concern is
undertaking a design/development process that may prove obsolete in the
not-so-distant future, as states (potentially) change reporting
requirements, formats, etc. Has anyone else heard about the 801 byte format
that is supposedly becoming a standard? Our new hire contact with the state
of Georgia told me this format is fast becoming standard among most of the
states. Is he correct?
Finally, if he is, is there any word from Oracle as to whether this
output could be standardized in HRMS, so that a standard flat file can be
produced every time new hire reporting is due? Thanks in advance for any
information.

I am interested in learning other's experiences with the Payroll Message
Report, a standard report in HRMS . It appears that this report was intended
to be an exception report, alerting payroll to employees who were not being
processed correctly in a payroll run. We've found that not only does it not
do a good job with this, but it also includes a lot of information which is
not helpful at all.
Our biggest concern is that it does not provide employees who have been
incorrectly set-up and who won't be successfully processed in a payroll.
Currently, we identify these employees at various stages of the payroll
process, occasionally as late as the check writer process or even after that
(when the employee calls wondering what happened to his/her check...?).
Other concerns: employees who have a "no earnings to calculate" message,
when 90% of the time, the employee actually does have earnings and is paid
normally. Also, all the employees receive the "no WC rate..." message.
Finally, even when we use the "Fatal" parameter, almost all the messages
aren't fatal or even particularly useful.
Anybody have any tips on making this report useful...? Or should we just
grin and bear it and wait for another release...! Thanks,
James Wood

George: We had the hardest time getting the Multiple Worksite Report and
State Quarterly Wage Listing reports to work and ended up creating our own
custom reports using Oracle delivered Balance Packages. Each state gives
you a specific format that want the information in and also the media. Some
states will accept ASCII files on a diskette - that is fairly easy. Others
need a mainframe fromat on tape - this will require some JCL to transfer
files to mainframe and then gen the tapes.

We have setup and processed the standard functionality of the State
Quarterly Wage Listings at our clients. The setup is fairly detailed and
requires you to know the formatting requirements of each state. For each
GRE, there are various setup parameters that you must establish:
1. SQWL Employer Rules (1)
2. SQWL Employer Rules (2)
3. SQWL Generic Transmitter Rules
4. SQWL State Transmitter Rules
Since you are operating in Florida, you should not need any additional setup
on employee assignments' "GRE's and Other Data".

We have about 90,000 W2's to print and we have had an outside service print
