Subject: ADI-Changing DB Alias
Tech Support gave me (as unsupported) a procedure to change the Database
Alias in an ADI Excel Worksheet - namely going into the hidden sheets and
changing the names.
We are presently upgrading to ADI 5.0, and discovered that half the
department is set up with on alias name into financials ("Prod"), and the
other half has a different name ("Production").
I'm trying to avoid selecting who has to re-create their templates. Has
anybody tried changing the db alias, and did the templates continue to
work??
Thanks.
Andy

Andy,
I may be mis-understanding the question, but can't you do this
in the Registry?
When I do an ADI install, I "import" the GLDI APPS INSTANCES
Registry Key containing all the instances, after manually editing
my original as things change... I also import the HELPBASEURL
key I created once for their ADI help...
This way you just "re-create the template" once; and "import the key" for
everyone else.
FYI,
Chris

Andy,
I saw Chris Uptmore's response, but that is not the problem you are
encountering, is it? Your concern is not updating each user's registry
entry, but instead dealing with the already-existing Excel spreadsheets
that point to different db aliases, right?
We ran into this same problem, but I have not tried the workaround you
mentioned. Can you forward me the details?
BTW, to resolve our problems, we just created a single empty template
with the correct db alias and then cut/pasted the rows from the existing
spreadsheets into it and saved each one. A bit tedious, but it worked.

Peter, Chris, and others,
Peter is right, it is the Excel spreadsheets that point to two different db
aliases. When we upgraded from GLDI 3 to 4, we had to re-create all the
templates. I don't want to do that again - we have alot more spreadsheets to
do.
The workaround involved unhiding the Criteria worksheet, and then changing
the db name. I can understand why deelopment doesn't want people changing
the hidden sheets. This change looks simple - but I'm trying to find out if
anyone had any problems with it...

Fair enough, I mis-understood the question.
As I said, I "install" ADI...
(...or at least I thought I said that. Seems odd
for Peter to have "included" my name and
"excluded" my comments I "re-included" below(?))
We are ADI 4.2 waiting for an Excel/2000-certified
ADI 6 release, which I was just told has been delayed
to early Nov99, with E/2000-certification to follow.
I'm guessing this means neither ADI 4 or 5 works
with Excel/2000 and I was hoping to gain some
insight concerning ADI 5, i.e., why waste time
installing ADI 5?
Andy, are you talking about ADI 4.2 to 5.0 with
Excel97? Have you looked at Excel 2000?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
We support over 400 users on Excel 97; we are not going to upgrade Excel for
the 15 or so users in accounting...
The ADI upgrade wasn't supposed to be hard; I'm really waiting for ADI 7,
which I think is includes support for Report Sets..
