FSG performance

Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 12:10:58 -0400
From: "Farber, Andy" farban@consumer.org
Subject: GL: FSG Performance

We just completed our budget cycle for FY 2000 (our fiscal year begins June 1st).

I found that some FSGs take much longer than they had in the past - the FSG with 12 month spread takes 4 times as long for FY 2000 as for prior fiscal years.

Any ideas or suggestions?

FSG completes with RG_UTIL_MEMORY error

Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 16:58:46 -0500
From: Mike Dennis mdennis@mdp.com
Subject: GL: FSG's failing with RG_UTIL_MEMORY error

All:

We are experiencing some issues with certain Financial Statement Generator (FSG) reports within Oracle Ledger. Reports which extract a lot of data complete with an error:

affmal failed.
Message Name:
RG_UTIL_MEMORY
Memory allocation failure.
Aborting due to allocation failure.

A "lot of data" usually means a summarization of our profit/loss statement at the corporation level with 6-8 columns of data (ie. various actual quarters or year-to-date figures and/or various budgets). We are not using summary accounts, nor consolidation.

Opened a TAR last September, but no real progress was made on it. At the time, our DBA monitored the server when the report was running and determined that we are not using the full memory nor the virtual memory available on disk.

We run Optimizer weekly.

We wonder if there might be some database parameters that might be preventing the FSG program from utilizing more memory? This is becoming increasingly critical as management is requesting ever more complex reporting from FSG.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Our production instance is 10.7SC prod 16.1. Database version 7.3.4. Server O/S is HP-UX 10.20.

Hi Mike,

Do you have 'write' permission on the login directory of the user running this report? You should also have 'write' permission on /tmp or any other directory which are assigned in APPLSYS.env file.

Import across 2 instances with different AFF structure

From: Rajendra Gutta CMCIRPG@NJTRANSIT.STATE.NJ.US
Subject: FSG IMPORT ACROSS CHANGING ACCTNG FLEXFIELD STRUCTURE.

Hi FSG gurus,
We need to copy the FSG row sets/column sets/content sets from one instance to another instance,it is fine with all the components apart from the row sets, the issue is we have a change of Accounting Flexfield structure,ie there is change in the positions of Account,Management Ctr segments from 2,3 to 3,2 in the new instance. Is there a way we could import the Row sets in this situation without needing to re type the whole range of account ranges in the new instance. The Program FSG Transfer states the need for identical Chart of Accounts Structure across both the instances.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Raj.

STAT, Translated and Entered Balances

Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 15:38:55 -0400
From: sbradley@sprynet.com
Subject: FSG - STAT, Translated and Entered Balances

I am trying to build an FSG that has 4 different balance types. The report looks like below:

ActualBudget
Headcount1011
Expenses (IEP)1,2221,000

The first row is in STAT currency with actual and budget balances. The second is in Irish Pounds. The Actual is translated balance from USD functional currency. The budget is entered in IEP (not translated from USD functional). I have not been able to get all 4 amounts on one report. If I set a control value for the expense row I must define if it is Entered or Translated for the whole row. If I do not define a control value then the default is translated. The actual and budget will not appear together in either case. If I set a control value for the Budget column to get the "Entered" IEP budget I must specify a currency for the column - STAT budgets will not appear.

Does anyone have a solution without having to enter all budgets in USD and translate budgets for several countries into various currencies every month?

Budget and Actuals in same column

Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 16:48:20 -0400
From: sbradley@sprynet.com
Subject: FSG - Actual and Budget in same Column

I am building a trend report that has actual and budget in the same column. Example:

JanFebMar
Headcount
Actual101213
Budget121212
Variance2-(1)

Sales
Actual
Budget
Variance

In FSG's to indicate relative periods (POI-x) you must indicate a balnace type in the column. This means you can only have budget or actual in a column for a trend report. You will eliminate my next problem if you can come up with a way to do the above in a simpler way than I have come up with.

The above report is mostly statistical since the financial data is more operational than financial. I have created Statistical accounts for all of the actual balances. I have also created companion statistical accounts for all budgets. Example: S0001 and B0001 for actual and budget headcount respectively. There are also budget values stored for all of the Sxxxx values because these are needed in the traditional budget variance reports of PTD Actual, PTD Budget and variance.

I would like to find an automated way to get the Sxxxx budgets copied to Bxxxx actual. Otherwise they will need to be keyed every month (to avoid opening the periods to post them at the beginning of the year).

I investigated recurring JE's but thier formulas can only look at USD currency. I looked at MassAllocations and they cannot look at budgets.

You can use the Mass Allocation feature in GL ( 10.7 16.1 ) to copy Budgets to Actuals. The column after Period ( off the screen ) is Balance type and Budget is an option.

I did not fully go thru your requirement but it looks like your FSG report is little away from conventional design.

You can assign balance types, currencies and period offsets to columns as well as rows also. You have to wisely play with these things and control values to get the required output. Bear in mind that FSG is not a very flexible reporting tool and need some sacrifice in design or layout.

Percentage Column on Net Sales

Subject: FSG

Hi all,

Is it possible to have a percentage column based on Net Sales in the report? I am working on a P&L report on FSG and Net Sales is one of the rows in my report. If I do a calculation column I can select only columns and not rows for basing my calculation.

Thanks for all of your input in advance,
Shanthi

Hi

Suppose you have a P&L A/c with the following rows :

Line No.          Line Item
10                     Facilities
20                     Utilities
30                     Miscellaneous
40                     Total Expenses

The Columns may be

Column 1                                         Column 2
Bal. Type YTD Actual           Percentage of Line No. 10-30 of 40
(Total is required)

For each line item of your row set (10 to 30), in the Percent of Row Field in the Advanced Options, enter the line no. of the denominator to be used for calculating percentage i.e 40 (Total Expenses).

Next in your column set for the column in which you want to get percentages, go to calculations and enter % as the operator and sequence number of your first column in the Low/High values, which could be say 10.

The report would look like this

                              YTD Actual                    Percentage
Column sequence          10                                        20
Currency                   USD                             (Not reqd.)
Facilities                       10                                      16.67
Utilities                       20                                      33.33
Miscellaneous               30                                      50.00
Total                           60                                      100.00

Rowset Maps vs. Summary Accounts

To: "OraApps-L (E-mail)" oraApps-L@cpa.qc.ca
Subject: FSG Rowset Maps vs. Summary Accounts

We use (complex) rowset mappings to define our financial statements.

I've been considering defining parent accounts, and replacing the maps in the rowsets with summary accounts. Our goals would be to (a) reduce the run times of the FSGs and (b) eliminate some duplication, where the same line must appear in more than one report.

Can anyone suggest the pros and cons of this? I'd expect an increase in posting times for the summary accounts, and perhaps an increase in disk utilization, but how much?

Thanks.

Hi Bhaskar,

Yes you could you autocopy function. Try this on the test environment to see the results. I was at the client site at the inception of the project and wrote a bit of their FSG reports. By organization do you mean the company or the various cost centers?. When I left there were companies and whole lot of cost centers. Do you want the cost elements reports or the financials ? or is this totally a new report that was added on later on. Please let me know. Please say hi to Bob Bodycombe, Dave Wheeler and the gang. Need a little more information to guide you in the right direction. Hope I was of some use. Bye.

Do mean copy FSGs from one instance to another? If so you have to use the "Program-FSG transfer" . You have to run this from TARGET instance. BTW, the source and target chart of accounts should be same.

Organization is not a standard term used within General Ledger. Therefore, it is not clear what you are trying to do. AutoCopy is good for creating a duplicate of an FSG component within the same GL instance. You can then use the "copy" to make modifications and create a new component that is a new version of the old.

There is also the ability to copy FSG's and their components from one database instance to another. This is very helpful when you want to develop your FSG's in a test environment and then move them to Production after proper testing. To do this you need to have your DBA define a database link between the test and production environments. You can then use the concurrent request "Program - FSG Transfer" (from a destination responsibility) to copy the reports and their components.

Do anyone know why we can see column sets across the Organizations and not the rowsets, content sets and row orders? In our case we have different set of books also.
