Printer Setup - Lexmark

From: Scott Bullinger
Subject: SysAdmin: Printer Setup - Lexmark
Apps: 11.0.2
DB: 8.0.5
Platform: Sun Solaris 2.6
Has anybody else tried to setup a Lexmark OptraE+ printer in Oracle? It is supposed to be like an HPLJ4L. I have been using the HPLJ4 drivers and have gotten it to work for the most part. However when printing reports in both landscape and landwide, the last 4 or 5 characters tend to get cut off.

Does anybody have any ideas? Also, does anybody have a list of the initialization string commands so that I can decipher what the string is telling the printer?

Thank you, Scott Bullinger

Hi, You basically have to use the compress mode. Refer to the Printer User Manual supplied by the manufacturer. It will have different esc. Sequences. Just add that. Bounce the Conc. Mgr. I had similar requirement, which I could solve by referring to Manual. hi
I am very new to the printer setup's in Oracle Applications and I am trying to setup a printer driver for HPLJ6MP printer. I searched in several places(Metalinks,HP support) to find info on this but did not succeed. We are currently using the following

HP Unix 10.20
Oracle Applications 10.7
Oracle 7.3

Please share any info related to this problem.

The HPLJ4 driver should work fine. Unless you want to use advanced features of the printer you are using. I do not know of any specific issues regarding the 6 and Oracle. That does not mean there are any though. Try the 4 Drivers and post any specific questions you have.

Printer configuration

Subject: Re: Network Print Blues

Hello Print Gurus,
Ours is a new installation of Oracle Financials, we are almost done with the setup on the functional side and are ready to go Live. Printer configuration in Apps is very confusing to me, I have a couple of questions in this regards.

We'll give it a shot...

1) Do I have to configure all my printers on the UNIX server (We have 13 regional offices each will have atleast 2 printers).

Yes. Printing under the Oracle Applications is done through the concurrent manager processes (which run as the unix user "applmgr" on your "back-end" server. When a concurrent manager job runs (report) an ascii (generally) file is produced that resides on the filesystem on your RDBMS server (usually) The concurrent manager must then send that job (usually through the lp or lpr commands, although some platforms do allow for slightly different ones) to the printer from Unix.

2) Can I do the setup in such a way that my print jobs are spooled to the network printer(Having Unique IP address), if yes how can I register it in Oracle Applications.

Yes. But this depends heavily on what kind of network hardware is installed at the printer. Talk to your Unix guru about printing through the lpr or lpNet protocols from Unix. If they can do it from the command line, you should just have to register it in the applications at that point.

You will have to set up drivers inside of the Oracle Application (search the OraApps-L archive for "print" and "jmorrow", there should be some postings up there that contain drivers for HP and a full explaination of printing under Oracle)

If you can't find the postings, e-mail me directly and I'll try to scare them up.

3) We already have a number of printers on the network can I use them for printing in Apps (These printers are not configured in the UNIX server).

Yes. Again, as long as they can be configured at your Unix box. Typically, this is done through some sort of network interface at the printer itself (Either a "print server" box from Emulex or DPI, or through a "HP JetDirect" or similar card in the printer itself).

I don't recommend (although there are ways to get it done) printing to a printer that's attached directly to a PC. This is primarilly because people tend to turn off PC's at inconvienent times. Not to mention disk space management issues when it comes tos pooling on a client machine. And the Printing from the Oracle Applications isn't done through the Windows "Printer Share" mechanism. In fact the applications don't even recognize it.

Also, depending on your network "file/print server" architecture, you might want to consider dumping from unix to your NT/Novell File/Print server and hitting the printers from there. Although, I typically would recommend printing directly to the printer wherever possible.

I will appreciate if anybody could share their experiences and help me drive in the right direction. Thanks in Advance,

I took another approach. I found a simple but nice program called RPM (Remote Print Manager). It is installed on a Windows NT or Windows 9X as the print server. All the PC users share their printers and the Print Server is configured to print to these clients. Later on the Unix server all the printers are installed using lpadmin command as if they are connected on the print server. When the RPM runs on the PC, Unix machines are able to see and send the print jobs to this PC. Lastly the same printers have to be installed within Oracle Applications. I have not experienced any problem so far. If anything in more detail is required please contact me.

HP4000 printer

Subject: Printing Driver/Strings Question

Hi All,

We are in the process of implementing 11.02 Financial applications, and we have run into some printing issues where several lines of page one (6 to be exact on a Landscape report) print on another page, and the rest of that page is blank. This second page is not numbered, it just has the printed "overflow" lines on it.

We are printing on an HP4000 printer, with print style of HPLJ4SI. We have not touched the initialization strings in the drivers, and I wouldn't expect that we have to with an HP printer.

Has anyone run into this issue, and if so could you please share your experiences/resolutions???

Thank you in advance for your help. Bill

Bill, the initialization strings in Oracle Apps are "examples only and not supported". We found that we absolutely did have to customize them, as well as the HPL.prt file found in $FND_TOP/reports.

We use (on HP-UX), with good results:

Arguments: lp -c -o raw (....)
Init: /eE/e&l1l1o2a8d4e68F/e&k2S/e(8U/e(s0P/e&l5.2941C/e&k2G
Reset: /eE

HPL.prt:
printer "HPLJ Landscape"

height 66
width 132

return control(M)
linefeed control(J)

code "bold on" esc "(s7B"
code "bold off" esc "(s0B"

I had the same problem with Oracle standard reports. I also have an HP4000 printer and am using the HP4SI drivers. I also tweeked the drivers strings to print reports in portrait/condensed orientation using a landscape driver. Most Oracle standard reports print using a landscape orientation, so I changed the landscape string to print portrait.

I also had to adjust the HPL.prt driver to allow for more rows. Make sure the HPL SRW driver is the same for the printer driver and style type (landscape).

By the way we are on NT4.0, but I would assume the strings would be the same.

Hope this helps. Richard

Thank you very much for your help, I will update this in test and give it a try. Can you tell me where you got this information, was it from a manual, or trial and error? Do you know where I could get these strings for other styles such as HPLJ3SI and LQ1070?

Thank you again very much, Bill

It was primarily trial and error based on documentation available from HP on PCL language. Basic documentation on the language is available from HP's website at http://www.hp.com . Use the search engine to find "PCL language reference". You will get several good hits.

I personally own and use the "PCL 5 Printer Language Technical Reference Manual" from HP. Mine is old (1990) but still works. Part # 33459-90903. Of course I don't know if a newer manual is now available. Probably so.

All of the various HP printers currently sold understand PCL 5. We use the same strings for both HP LJ4 and HP LJ4000 N printers, as well as Xerox 4230 printers. We have never used LJ3 series printers, but I would bet they might work as well. LQ1070? I don't recognize that printer at all. If it is sold as "LaserJet compatible" as so many printers (like that Xerox) are, try it with the same drivers.

These are the setup strings we used for all PCL5 printers from HP4SI to HP8000DN. It should work on the 8100DN:

Landscape duplex: /eE/e&l1so2a5.45C/e(s0p16.66H/e&k6.75H
Landscape single page: /eE/e&l0s1o2a5.45C/e(s0p16.66H/e&k6.75H
Portrait duplex: /eE/e(s0t0p11H/e&l1s0o2a7C/e&a5L
Portrait single page: /eE/e(s0t0p11H/e&l0so2a7C/e&a5L

The 5M is a dual mode postscript/PCL5 printer. Which mode are you running it in? Make sure if you are sending PCL codes that the printer is in PCL mode.

Al,

Here is what we are using for landscape:
/eE/e&l1o/e(s0P/e&l8D/e&k2G/000

reset:
/eE/000

Note: The /000 for the HP5s and the Lexmark printers made a huge difference. But still ... I found printer initialization and setup to be one of the most frustrating of the Sys Admin chores. I am disappointed that I could not find any white papers on a organized printer setup and testing for Oracle Applications. I guess that means that if I ever get organized I should do it myself.

HPLJ 4000N on NT

Subject: Init Strings for HPLJ 4000N on Windows NT Server

Hi All:

I am on version 10.7SC Prod 16.6 running on Windows NT Server. I am utilizing the Oracle provided initialization strings for LANDSCAPEHPLJ4 AND PORTRAITHPLJ4 to drive the following network printer: HP LaserJet 4000N.

In utilizing the provided initialization strings this what occurs. After each report a blank sheet is printed. Also any landscape oriented reports do not fit on the 8.5 x 11 sheet.

Any information formatted in the right margin area gets truncated for a landscape printout.

When I view the landscape report all the information is there.

Does anyone have the proper initialization strings for Portrait, Landscape, .... etc. for a HP LaserJet 4000N to run under Windows NT?

Any assitance is greatly appreciated.

We are having the same problem. I'm about to try the solution described in this excerpt from a Metalink document to see whether it will fix the problem (and not create another). I'll let you know if it works.

b. The Print Driver 'Standard Input' is not set correctly. To solve this issue, perform the following procedure:

1) Start with the System Administration responsibility.
2) Navigate to the printer driver definition form.
3) Query up the Printer Driver.
4) Change 'Standard Input' to 'No' and verify that the .prt driver file is in the desired mode; for example, landscape or portrait.
5) Bounce the concurrent manager for the change to take effect.

Note: If the error 'APP-0001 Printer Driver Assigned' occurs, apply patch 473091, then repeat the above steps.

'Standard Input' is described in more detail in the "Oracle Applications System Administration Manual Release 10", (A12540-12), page 9-42.

Hi,

Does anybody have Drivers for HPLJ5 ? I am using HPLJ5Si and still I am getting errors.

These are the problems I am facing:

1) A letter "P" is getting printed at TOP LEFT corner of the first page. Ofcourse, I set the "Standard Input" to NO and also tried with and without /e&k2G in Initial Settings.

2) Each Report page is conitnuing to the next page printing THREE extra lines.

I set 66 lines in the corresponding driver and The printer Styles are set for 66 lines. and I also tried with e&l66P to force 66 lines/ page.

Still the problem exists. Please let me know the exact settings and initialization and Reset string settings etc.

I am unable to print any report onto these "HPLJ5" printers.

For page overflow problem, look to the PRT file in FND_TOP/reports (or srw for 10.7 and below). For your letter "P", is that perhaps coming from your initialization string? It could be an extra / misunderstood command letter in that string.

I have noticed on our site that if the Printer is set to default to a certain style (configured at the PRINTER keypad), no matter what you send will revert to that setting, whether you send from UNIX OS or via the APPs. Check that first, especially if the printer is newly installed.

PS:
We are running 10SC 16.1(10.7) and are trying to print postscript (bitmap) via the APPS; are there any configuration settings that have to be added to the system profiles?

We developed reports in DESIGNER 2000 and can't get them to print bold settings (the reason to use postscript or bitmap ).

The reports print out fine with regular printing (not attempting bold type on titles).
