Subject: SysAdmin: Responsibility Management
Hi,
Has anybody implemented/thought/designed/known about a system
that manages responsibilities, their relationships with HR positions or
roles in the organization,
and assignment of responsibilities to users according to their position/role
in the organization ?
In large sites and comprehensive implementation of Oracle Applications,
a lack of a database to manage these may results in thousands
responsibilities,
perhaps 1 or more "private" responsibility to each user, which many of them
can be almost the same.
Any useful comment will be appreciated.

Subject: User Specific Responsibilities.
Someone posted a message last week concerning managing responsibilities that
are user specific. where you would only have a few users per
responsibilities. I have lost the original e-mail but wanted to respond.
My advice. Unless your responsibility structure is extremely stable. Don't
do it.
We have a similar situation here with our order entry, warehouse and
inventory responsibilities. To make each warehouse/storeroom only have
access to their own particular inventory locations, we had to set up
separate responsibilities. Not to the extent it sounds like you may have
to, we only have about 30 responsibilities that are exactly the same from a
menu/exclusion standpoint. The only difference is the name and the
"locations" attached to them. It is a maintenance/administrative pain. If
inventory adds/changes/deletes menu items (and as we are a relatively new
Oracle shop, we are always updating the responsibilities), I have to make
sure I hit every responsibility. The function process owner also has to
double check all the responsibilities.
I am not aware of any 3rd party tools that make this process easier-- Maybe
PeopleEase?. I think I have heard their name come up before with Oracle
SysAdmin, but I know nothing of the company or the product.
I do have a "dataload" macro I use to build the responsibilities which
helped with the initial load and any new responsibilities I have to build.
I also have several Discoverer reports I use to check my data entry if I
have any updates. But neither really help with the maintenance portion of
the job if the process owner wants something changed on the
responsibilities. I hope eventually that it will calm down and the process
owners will quit making changes -- just in time for our upgrade to Oracle 11
project, when I will have to rebuild them again!
Good luck with your project. I hope it goes well for you.

Instead of customizing the responsibities, perhaps customizing a menu and

just change the customized menu instead.

To register the Unix script, setup executable as
"host" and put the source script in the /bin directory with a
.prog suffix. You also need to do a link. For details, there's a good
write-up on www.geocities.com.
I'm having problems with file security between the app and Unix script. If
you get yours running, would appreciate any assistance you could provide.

Hello Dinesh,
The syntax for FND_FILE.NEW_LINE is FND_FILE.NEW_LINE(which file,number
of lines).
The first argument specifies whether it is the log file or output file.
The second specifies the number of lines to add.Give a valid number for the
second argument.
Also try to use number datatye for RETCODE arguent for the main procedure.
Hope this helps.

FYI, The RETCODE variable can be either NUMBER or VARCHAR2. It doesn't
matter. However, you are trying to send back an alpha numeric value. The
concurrent process that checks and interprets this value doesn't like the
alphanumeric value. Typically, you shouldn't have to send these values
back. If an error occurs in your procedure, the value will be flagged back
to the concurrent processing interpreter automatically. Hope this helps
you.

I have been the posting the problem as given below again & again. Finally I
have found the solution and thought of sharing it with you all as some of
you may enconter the same kind of scenario. However, first of all I would
like to express my gratitude to all of people who helped me by sending their
comments regarding this problem.
Solution:
1) Get the value of Environement variable APPLPTMP on your Server.
2) The value of APPLPTMP, which is a directory name, must be defined in
init.ora file for the paramter utl_file_dir.
Having done the above, I am able to send text to Log as well as Output file
( as defined in the Procedure given above) thru Concurrent Program of type
PL/SQL Stored Procedure.
Hope it helps to atlease some people. If someone needs further details,
please email me.
THANK YOU ALL.

I am new to this so excuse my ignorance. You are writing one statement to
the Log file and then one to the Output file. Are there only 2 files and
they are named Log and Output? The reason I am asking is because I want to
output data to a filename of my choice. I used to do this using utl_file in
a non-Apps database. Is this still possible to do in the apps?

You need to add /tmp to utl_file_dir in init.ora.
APPLPTMP dir is used by concurrent manager to store temporary files being
used to write output/log file contents.
Once Concrrent process is over, contents are transferred to actual files.
Lemme know if it works.

This is caused because procedure is getting exception while executing.
whenever we create a customised procedure we define two out variables as
(ErrBuf out varchar2, RetCode out number)
They hold any error message and error code if the procedure encounters
exception.
This error message and code is passed to any local variable within pl/sql
block where the
procedure is executed.
The APP-00407 occurs when the error message is too long to be held by
varchar2 variable.
The solution is increase the variable width which holds ErrBuf output.
