Subject: 10.7 Upgrade to Oracle 8 Database
We are currently using 10.7 Character with a 7.3.4 database. We are looking
into upgrading the database to 8.0.x as an intermediate step to a Release 11
upgrade. Has anyone done an upgrade from 7.3.x to 8.0.x for Apps version
10.7? If so, what problems did you encounter? Also, did any customizations
need to be modified?
Any information you could provide would be appreciated.

You're definitely looking at server partitioned mode, which can be a real
support nightmare. Other than that, you need to check Certify for platform
specific issues. You did not specify your platform.

I have run 10.7NCA with 8.0.4 since day one. Early on this was a
difficult environment due to the
* lack of experience within Oracle Support of server partitioned
environments
* as early adopters we were finding the areas of the apps which were not
Oracle 8 friendly.
I would have to say that in the last six months I have not had any
problems I would attribute to using Oracle 8. Just make sure you get
that interoperability patch, check carefully what it contains and then
test, test, test.

Suzanne,
We have running this server partitioned mode for apps 10.7 almost a year now
(on HP-UX 10.20 first, then HP-UX 11.0). We have not run into any big
problems. Two key things from this setup are:
1. Keep the environment for Oracle back-end stuff and oracle/applmgr apps
stuff separate on the server.
The back-end includes using svrmgrl for startup/shutdown and some dba
scripts. The apps stuff includes ccmgrs, adpatch, etc. We built two menus
for separating them (one is for 8 environment and the other is for 7
environment). applmgr account should always using 7 environment (with
TWO_TASK variable set on).
2. Depends on your operating system, on HP, you have to use OE listeners
from 7.3.x home NOT the one from 8.0.x home.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any specific questions!

10.7 NCA to 11.0

Subject: Re: Upgrading from 10.7 NCA to 11.0 while still implementing??
We are still in the process of implementing 10.7 NCA (we purchased the
software last August). We have part of the payroll up, with the
remaining apps to be up and running by 6/30/99. We are already
receiving the message from Oracle that we should upgrade to release 11.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Do you know when Oracle
will stop supporting 10.7 NCA? I am particularly worried about
upgrading since we are half way through our implementation. Thank you.

Subject: Re: Upgrading from 10.7 NCA to 11.0 while still implementing??
Sheila:
Why are they recommending that you upgrade to Release 11. Oracle still
plans to support 10.7 through Year-End processing this year. You should
contact Oracle Support to confirm this information as well as your current
version of the database.
If we were taking a client live on 6/30/99, I would be leaning against an
upgrade to R11 at the time unless you have already performed at least some
parallel testing. Your setups need to be fairly solid at this state if you
hope to go live with Payroll and upgrade to R11 at the same time. You may
also have some technical issues for Reports and Interfaces to third parties
based on changes in the Oracle HR/Payroll database in R11. Clearly, I do
not know your specific business need and the specific modules you are
implementing. There may be some specific functionality in HR/Payroll or one
of the other modules that was not back-ported to 10.7 but is still a firm
requirement of your organization. In this case, R11 may be necessary.
My recommendation is to proceed with caution. You should not expect to
upgrade from 10.7 to 11 in 2 or 3 weeks (even if you already have
experienced consultants who have already performed this upgrade before). If
you have flexibility to push your go-live dates with Payroll and the other
modules to 10/1/99, then now would likely be the best time to jump to R11.
Hope this helps,

Unfortunately you don't have the luxury of Field level Context-sensitive help
in Release 11
as u used to have it in 10.7 character.
However, by doing some rework like editing the .htm help files located under
your $OAH_TOP directory, u might be able to add the help text u want to
display.(Remember this is a customization and Oracle will not support it).
Making it field-level context sensitive will not be possible because of the
way On-line Help is architectured.

If you go to 10.7 NCA first (in my case) I have to reapply 16.1 and any

We were given this as an option by one of our consultants. The idea is
that you can run 10.7SC and 10.7NCA simultaneously and therefore make
the migration at a slower pace. It is then an easier transition to 11.x
because all the pieces for an NCA implementation are all in place.

True, it is an option. I may have fallen behind the latest information
about
SC/NCA running in parallel, but from what I'm aware of on one desktop, the
only supported code to run in parallel GL.
I would question the maintenance process until you are comfortable. Because
they will both point to the same DB, and if you need to apply a patch to an
application you will have two different patching scenarios.

We have heard the same . Only GL can be run in parallel.
We are, however, implementing 10.7 NCA (from 10.7 SC) this year with plans
to move to 11 next year. The major reason for this is that we don't have
time to upgrade our DBMS to ver 8, our HP/UX to ver 11, rework our
interfaces, test functionality, and still get our Y2K testing done. The
10.7 NCA upgrade seems relatively painless, and we can combine functionality
testing with Y2K testing. With NCA in place, the infrastructure will be in
ready for upgrading everything to run ver 11 once the dust settles next
spring.
If there is a serious flaw in this reasoning, I would be immensely grateful
to hear about it.

Hi Shockey,
Oracle is very clear in telling you can NOT have SC and
NCA product running in parallel. Because for both these
products the patch application strategy is different.
You can have "SC&CHAR" versions OR "NCA&CHAR" versions
installed but NOT "SC&NCA" versions installed. I would
suggest you read the Oracle's NCA architecture
documentation.
Let me know if you still have any questions on this.

Subject: Re:NCA User Access & other miscellaneous questions
Hi Greg,
I will try to answer your questions:
We are moving from 10.7 SC to 10.7 NCA, and just beginning our unit testing.
I hope some of you can help clear up some questions for us. Our platform is
HP/UX, Oracle 7.3.4, NT Application Server, and NT workstations.
1. What are the proper security and file access rights to the Unix box?
Does the Apps Server need a Unix login? Do the users? And what rights
should it/they have, if so?
On the UNIX box nothing gets changed, if you were running 10.7SC, it remains to
work as usual.Things might change IF YOU PLAN to go in SERVER partitioning mode.
No the Users do not need an rights on the UNIX box, neither does APPS server
need anything on the UNIX box.
2. What are the proper security and file access rights for the users on the
Apps Server? So they need file creation or update rights anywhere?
No the Users do not need any file access rights on the APPS server. The reports
etc are displayed to them using FNDFS, which will authenticate users based on
their login as usual.
3. APPSCERT.BAT: We know it registers the browser, but can anyone provide
some details on how often it should be run, how you have it set up on the
client machines, and what else it does besides creating identiydb.obj?
I am not too sure about this, but according to me it has to be done only once
when you install the appletviewer. However if you plan on using JINITIATOR,
then you don't even have to do this, it is done by the install process itself.
4. identitydb.obj: Is this unique to each workstation? Does it include
the IP address of the workstation? If so, does it need to be refreshed
whenever the workstation gets a new IP address lease?
I think it is unique, but not sure how it would work with DHCP, I would assume
that you won't have to refresh it.
5. Why can't we get Help to work?
You need to set a parameter as follows in your HTML file, like
PARAM name"clientBrowser" value"iexplore"
Also you need to make sure that iexplore.exe (for IE and netscape for NETSCAPE)
is in the path on the clients desktop. The way to test this is that you should
be able to enter "iexplore" on the command prompt and the browser should come
up. Otherwise, you should put the FULL path in the value i.e.
value"C:\Program.....", but then all your client machines should have the same
path.
I hope my answers will help you in better understand the way NCA works.
Thanks,
Nilesh

Are there any differences between the GL_CODE_COMBINATIONS indexes on your
10.7NCA database with the GL_CODE_COMBINATIONS indexes on your 10SC
database?
Run the following script to see:
select index_name, column_name
from dba_ind_columns
where table_name 'GL_CODE_COMBINATIONS'
order by index_name, column_position;
Make sure that all of the segments used in your accounting flexfield are
individually indexed. If you continue to have problems, email me the log
file for an FSG concurrent request which experienced the delay.

We are in the process of upgrading from 10.7 SC to R11. As per
Category 2 preupgrade step of Order Entry, all open picking headers
and lines should be closed and interfaced to inventory and
receivables.
In our system we have lot of backordered and partially shipped orders
and it is not possible for us to close all these orders just for
upgrade. Canceling the existing orders and order lines ( As suggested
by Oracle Support ) and reentering the orders after upgrade is also
not an option.
Has anybody faced this situation during upgrade to R11 ? If yes, what
is the solution? Is there any workaround ?
Pl. share your experiences.

Hello everyone,
We currently are planning an upgrade from 10.4.2 to 10.7SC Prod 16.1. We
use GL only. We use it plain, with very little customisation. I am not a
financial expert, so i would like to check with people who already made
this king of upgrade.
Currently we have AT&T NCR platform with OS 3.00.01, RDBMS 7.1.6.2.1 and
Financial 10.4.2 (GL). We will upgrade to OS 3.02, RDBMS 7.3.4 and
financial 10.7SC Prod 16.1.
I know we need to apply a patch (#494585) before we began the upgrade.
There's also the 7.3.4 Interoperability patch for NCR SVR4 to apply on the
server. I'll assume, we need to do this before the upgrade to 10.7SC.
There's also the patch set #4 and patch # 602378 to apply after the upgrade
to 10.7SC. Others patches ???
Anyone done this king of upgrade ?
Can we upgrade directly from 10.4.2 to 10.7Sc Prod 16.1 or do we need to do
intermediate upgrade?
Any other patch we need to apply?
What is the proper sequence for this upgrade (RDBMS upgrade, financial
upgrade & patches) ? Do we need to upgrade the RDBMS & Financial at the
same time or can we upgrade the database first and the financial a week
later ?
Any patchs needed for the client ?
Also how can we clone our production environnement on a other platform to
test the migration?
All the help i can get will be greatly appreciated.
